Overview

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Process Programmer to join our Roanoke Cement team in Troutville, VA. This role supports plant operations by developing, maintaining, and optimizing automation and process control systems across our cement manufacturing facility.

 

The Process Programmer plays a critical role in ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable plant operations by supporting PLC programming, HMI configuration, troubleshooting control systems, and implementing continuous improvement initiatives. This position works closely with Electrical, Maintenance, Production, and Engineering teams to enhance process stability, minimize downtime, and drive operational excellence.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, modify, and troubleshoot PLC and DCS control logic to support plant operations.
  • Maintain and optimize HMI/SCADA systems to ensure clear and accurate operator interfaces.
  • Support automation systems across kiln, raw mill, finish mill, quarry, crushers, and material handling processes.
  •  Diagnose and resolve control system failures in a 24/7 heavy industrial environment.
  • Collaborate with Electrical and Maintenance teams to troubleshoot VFDs, motors, instrumentation, and field devices.
  • Participate in root cause analysis (RCA) efforts to reduce unplanned downtime.
  • Identify and implement process control improvements to enhance efficiency, stability, and energy performance.
  • Support capital projects involving automation upgrades, system expansions, and modernization initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of control narratives, system changes, and programming revisions.
  • Coordinate with OEMs, contractors, and system integrators during system modifications and upgrades.
  • Support plant cybersecurity standards and industrial network reliability.
  • Adhere to plant safety policies, MSHA regulations, and company electrical safety procedures.
  • Participate in on-call support as needed for critical process systems.

Qualifications

  • Commitment to safety, compliance, and continuous improvement.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Automation, or related field preferred; equivalent industrial experience considered.
  • 3+ years of experience in industrial automation or process control in a manufacturing environment.
  • Hands-on experience with PLC platforms (Rockwell-Studio5000, Siemens-TIA Portal, or similar).
  • Experience with HMI/SCADA systems.
  • Working knowledge of industrial communication networks (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, etc.).
  • Experience troubleshooting VFDs, instrumentation, and electrical control systems preferred.
  • Experience in heavy industrial, cement, aggregates, mining, steel, or chemical manufacturing environments strongly preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced 24/7 production environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
